yahtzee faq

the questions that come up at every table, answered in a few sentences each – tap a question to open it. the full rules are on the rules page, every score on the scoring page, and the scorecard itself is one tap away.

how many rolls do you get per turn in yahtzee?

up to three. after the first and the second roll you may set aside any dice and roll the rest again – dice you set aside earlier may go back in, too. after the third roll at the latest, the result has to be entered in an open box or a box has to be scratched. if you are happy after the first or second roll, you may enter it right away.

the whole turn, step by step, is on the rules page.

how much is the yahtzee bonus and when do you get it?

35 points, as soon as the upper section – ones to sixes – adds up to at least 63. 63 is exactly three of each number: three ones, three twos and so on up to three sixes. if you fall short on the small numbers, you have to make it up on the big ones.

the scorecard adds the bonus by itself and shows with the bonus trend whether you are still on track. in yatzy the bonus is 50 points from 63; generala has no bonus – see the scores of the other rule sets.

how much is a yahtzee worth?

50 points. a yahtzee is five dice showing the same number, whichever number it is – five ones are worth as much as five sixes. it is the highest single score in the lower section of the card. what a second yahtzee brings is the next question.

what happens with a second yahtzee?

diceblock follows the kniffel rules, the german edition of the game: a further yahtzee earns no extra points. the roll is entered like any other into an open box – as sixes in the upper section, say, as three or four of a kind with the sum of all dice, or as chance.

the american yahtzee edition awards a 100-point bonus for it; the scorecard does not count that. what else sets yahtzee and kniffel apart is further down.

what is the difference between three of a kind and four of a kind?

three of a kind needs at least three dice showing the same number, four of a kind at least four. in both cases the score is the sum of all five dice, not just the matching ones. a yahtzee satisfies both and may be entered there as well.

every box of the lower section comes with an example roll on the scoring page; in yatzy the kinds count differently, see other rule sets.

how many points are full house, small straight and large straight?

full house 25, small straight 30, large straight 40 – fixed values, whatever the dice show. a full house is three of one number and two of another (2-2-2-5-5, say), a small straight is four consecutive numbers (1-2-3-4, 2-3-4-5 or 3-4-5-6), a large straight five (1-2-3-4-5 or 2-3-4-5-6).

all three are in the lower section of the scoring page, with example rolls. yatzy and generala use different values, see the scores of the other rule sets.

what is chance in yahtzee?

the box that takes any roll: you simply enter the sum of all five dice. chance is the rescue for a roll that fits nowhere else – which is why most players save it instead of spending it early on a mediocre roll. it is the last box of the lower section.

do you have to scratch a box in yahtzee?

yes, if after the third roll the dice fit no open box you would want to fill. the scratched box then counts 0 points and is used up. scratching hurts least in the ones or the yahtzee box; a scratched box in the upper section makes the bonus hard to reach.

on the scorecard you scratch a box by tapping it and then tapping “scratch”. the rule itself is under scratching & end of the game.

when does yahtzee end and who wins?

after 13 rounds: by then every player has filled or scratched each of their 13 boxes once. the highest grand total of upper section, bonus and lower section wins. yatzy takes 15 rounds, generala 11.

the scorecard keeps the totals and marks the winner at the end. for more excitement, the game modes battle, minigolf and countdown decide the winner differently than by grand total.

can you play yahtzee with two players or alone?

yes. yahtzee works with any number of players, including alone against your own best score. on the scorecard, one to six players share one device, each in their own column; who starts can be drawn by lot.

for more variety with two players there are the game modes battle, minigolf and countdown – and if you are not at the same table, you can play online together.

can you play yahtzee online with friends?

yes. a game can be shared via qr code or a link; whoever opens it sees the same scorecard on their own device and enters their scores there. everyone sees every entry live. you roll with real dice – at the table, or even at a distance, when everyone rolls and enters for themselves.

nobody needs an account, and no app either (more on that). just start a game and tap “invite”.

what is the difference between yahtzee, kniffel and yatzy?

yahtzee and kniffel are the same game under two names: yahtzee is the american edition, kniffel the german one, with 13 boxes and a 35-point bonus. yatzy is the scandinavian variant with 15 boxes – one pair and two pairs are added –, fixed values for the straights and a 50-point bonus. generala from spain and argentina has 11 boxes and rewards what succeeds on the very first roll.

the scorecard knows all three rule sets; you choose when starting a new game. the rules page explains the differences, the scoring page has every score side by side.

do you need an app or an account for diceblock?

no. the scorecard runs in the browser, on the phone as on the computer, free and without signing up. the game stays saved in the browser and is back on your next visit. if you like, add the page to your home screen like an app. what is stored and what is not is in the legal notice.
